Kathleen Kennedy is assuming that girls didn't care about Star Wars because they couldn't identify with the main male hero, they could only identify with Princess Leia. However she still thinks boys can identify with female characters like Rey or Jyn Erso or admiral Holdo etc...
This narrow minded vision explains why Luke has been mishandled in Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, because girls could not relate to him, he was therefore completely useless to Disney.
