'The Girl From Ipanema', or 'Garota De Ipanema' is the 2nd-most-recorded tune in history after The Beatles' 'Yesterday'. 'The Girl from Ipanema' is one of the most enduring melodies in Bossa Nova. It probably is the only song about unrequited love to be set to a tune that's both lilting and melancholic.

That's what makes Bossa Nova so unique.

Bossa Nova, or 'New trend', is a genre of music that was developed by Antonio Carlos Jobim (aka Tom Jobim) and Joao Gilberto. Born from unconventional chords and syncopated rhythms, it is a fusion of traditional Samba and Jazz. The lesser pronounced notes and missed beats render the genre its trademark sophistication. Despite its complexity, the melodies are ever-alluring and soothing.

Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes wrote the original version in 1962 in Portuguese. Later, Norman Gimbel penned the English lyrics.
In 1964, Joao Gilberto, Stan Getz, and Astrud Gilberto - the ultimate Bossa Nova trio - released a version that turned out to be an international hit.
