Learning how to surf was never on my list of things to do. But I started to stand up paddle on flat water 2 years ago and was wondering what's next. The answer was SUP surfing. I can confirm it's accessible to anyone willing to learn the proper technique. You'll also need a good teacher to help you in the beginning and follow your progress.

This is my first video of me learning how to SUP surf. I'm in Costa da Caparica, Portugal. It's a long stretch of coast south of Lisbon that's great for water sports like surfing, kite, windsurf depending on the wind speed and direction. Summer mornings there are off-shore or light cross-shore winds and the waves are generally better shaped and easier to read. This is probably the most important thing when you start surfing. The correct reading of the take-off spot is about 80% of the job of catching waves.

After that, you go straight to the beach. This is where your balance will be tested by white water which is quite turbulent. But it's a good way to begin to get the feeling of surfing. The secret is to have your weight on your front foot so you won't fall and keep up your speed with the wave.

The equipment doesn't make the surfer but having the right one is crucial for your beginning and improvement.

A longboard style SUP with enough volume for your weight is recommended.
